Choosing the Perfect Front Door For Your Home: UPVC Or Composite?

Do not underestimate the importance of your front door, as it plays a crucial role in your house for various reasons.

When visitors approach your entrance, their attention is naturally drawn to its appearance. The design of your front door largely defines the overall character of your building, and it is essential that it provides security.

If your current front door is lacking in any of these crucial aspects, it should be a top priority to replace it. Two standout options to consider are UPVC doors and composite doors.

Most of us are familiar with UPVC doors, which consist of an insulated steel frame wrapped in un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride (UPVC). However, some may not be as familiar with composite doors.

What is a composite door?

As the name suggests, a composite door is made with various materials, including UPVC, wood, foam, and a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) skin.

With a realistic wood grain finish, the GRP skin may give a look of timber but performance-wise, it will be much stronger and more durable than a traditional timber door.

One of the standout qualities of a composite door is its strength. You will struggle to find a stronger or more energy efficient door than the composite doors available at Bon Accord.

The different elements of a composite door

What is the difference between a composite door and UPVC door?

In contrast to composite doors, UPVC doors are manufactured using just one material (plastic). Composite doors are thicker, with a frame of about 44mm, which is considerably thicker than the 28mm door frame of a UPVC door.

Understandably, there is a price difference between the two doors. Composite doors are higher in price because of the sheer number of materials used.

While UPVC doors cost less than composite doors, they still provide an extremely long list of benefits, including incredible thermal efficiency and advanced security.

How should I clean and maintain my composite or UPVC door?

Cleaning your UPVC and composite is easy. Every four months, simply fill a bucket with warm, soapy water to clean the frame surfaces with a soft cloth. Solvent based cleaners and abrasive materials should be avoided.

Once a year, do the same for all the hardware, including locks, hinges, handles and other door furniture.

You should also take time to regularly remove debris in the threshold and drainage holes of the door, especially if we are experiencing bad weather. This will keep water out of the seals.
