Examining Your Windows To Check If They’re Winter-Ready

Home is the best place to be in the winter, out of the cold and in a cosy living setting, that’s assuming that your property is snug inside.

To uncover if your home is insulated enough to shield you from the colder temperatures, you need to inspect your windows.

They’re one of the foremost defence mechanisms against the weather and could well be a cause of draughts and a fast-rising energy bill.

We can tell you how to do this and identify if replacements are needed, as well as suggest appropriate window coverings for beating off the elements.

Spot any gaps

The energy efficiency offered by your windows will be compromised if there are any gaps in them for outside air to sneak through.

Draughts can sometimes be detected by feeling around the edges of the windows, and use a close eye to try and identify any gaps or cracks in the frames and seals. Another method of pinpointing draughts is to hold a lit candle near the windows and look out for the flame fluttering, which it will do if draughts are managing to get in.

Gaps will need to be plugged with some kind of seal e.g. caulking or excluder, if you would prefer to keep your existing windows.

Sealing windows

Cover the windows

Window treatments are a practical solution for retaining privacy and injecting style into window designs, and will also stem any flow of cold air.

Thermal curtains are thick and can block air leaks and reduce energy wastage. Cellular shades, also sold as honeycomb shades, have a construction that firmly traps in air too, or use window film to create a fresh layer of insulation.

Upgrade to new designs

Not everyone has the competency to organise sealing themselves and window coverings will have minimal impact if air leaks are acute. It’s more advisable and effective to get guaranteed, long-term insulation with new energy efficient window replacements.

Investment into UPVC, aluminium or timber windows is costlier than going down the sealing route or buying window coverings, but at least it ensures you of the elimination of air leaks and enhanced comfort.

The minimum window energy rating you’re permitted to fit is ‘C’ and Bon Accord’s window solutions offer a rating well above that, possessing insulating frames and low-emissivity glass.

Energy efficient windows in a detached home

You may be unaware of the mandatory obligation that replacement windows incorporate trickle vents, a device allowing small amounts of ventilation to improve the air quality in homes. This does not bring rise to strong draughts! This will be discussed with you when organising new windows at a design appointment.
